Ernest Dowson
They are not long, the days of wine and roses

Ernest Christopher Dowson

 2nd August 1867 - 23rd February 1900

Ernest Dowson, poet and Author died penniless in an Absinthe haze, created some of the best poetry of the decedent era. However his words are often not known as his own, lines such as "Gone With the Wind" which is better known as the name of a film, rather than a line from an outstanding poem.

Ernest lived an all too short life, dying aged 32, just Months before his friend Oscar Wilde.

This website is a small space dedicated to the life and words of Ernest Dowson.

Please take a moment to read about the campaign to restore his grave.

The unveiling of Dowson's restored grave will take place on August 2nd 2010 at 2pm in the Brockley & Ladywell Cemetery.

Vitae summa brevis spem nos vetat incohare longram

T
hey are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate :
I think they h
ave no portion in us after
We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days
of wine and roses :
Out of a mi
sty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream
